Professional Sod Installation & Precision Soil Prep
Every project is completed by our full-time, uniformed craftsmen with company-owned machinery. We never subcontract your yard.
Old Lawn Removal & Excavation
We strip diseased grass, Bermuda weed runners, and unviable topsoil down to clean subgrade, hauling away heavy green waste to approved recycling facilities.
Heavy Clay Soil Conditioning
We rototill 4 to 6 inches deep, blending organic compost, gypsum, and soil sulfur to balance pH levels and optimize soil porosity for root aeration.
Precision Laser Grading
We eliminate low spots, sinkholes, and scalping mounds, creating smooth grade transitions along paver edges, concrete driveways, and garden borders.
Marathon & Dwarf Tall Fescue Sod
San Diegoβs top-selling residential turf. Provides rich, emerald green color year-round, exceptional shade tolerance, and superior soft-textured blade density.
Hybrid Bermuda & Warm-Season Grasses
Engineered for high-traffic sports play, dogs, and hot inland sun. Varieties like Tifway 419 and Celebration Bermuda go dormant briefly in winter but recover rapidly.
Post-Installation Compaction & Rolling
We roll the newly laid lawn with a weighted lawn compactor, pressing root mats firmly into soil to prevent dry air gaps, settling, and seam curling.
Project Spotlight: Compacted Clay Excavation & Marathon II Fescue Installation
Real problems solved with engineered craftsmanship for East County homeowners.
Project Spotlight: Compacted Clay Excavation & Marathon II Fescue Installation
Location: Carlton Hills, Santee, CA (San Diego County)
A residential front and backyard suffered from severe water pooling, severe crabgrass infestation, and heavily compacted clay that killed two previous DIY seed attempts.
Supervised by Chris Burgio and Field Foreman Chuck, our in-house crew stripped 3,200 sq ft of dying turf and thatch down 3 inches. We roto-tilled the sub-base with 12 yards of premium organic topsoil amendment and 500 lbs of agricultural gypsum. Chuckβs crew re-aligned 18 sprinkler pop-up heads, installed high-efficiency MP Rotator nozzles, laser-graded the surface for positive drainage toward perimeter swales, and laid fresh Marathon II Dwarf Fescue sod with staggered seams. The entire lawn was compacted with a 250-lb water roller and saturated with an initial deep root cycle.
Root knitting completed in just 11 days. The homeowner enjoyed a lush, uniform green turf lawn with zero standing puddles and pristine edging along concrete walkways.

Frequently Asked Questions
Clear answers on licensing, soil mechanics, and our on-site standards.
What turf grass varieties perform best in San Diego County?
The ideal turf variety depends on inland versus coastal heat and sun exposure. Dwarf Tall Fescue (such as Marathon II or Medallion) delivers year-round evergreen color and deep root drought tolerance for full sun to partial shade. For high-heat inland valleys with heavy foot traffic, warm-season Hybrid Bermuda (Tifway 419) and St. Augustine provide aggressive self-repairing runners and superior heat endurance.
Why is soil preparation and laser grading essential before laying sod?
Over 90% of sod failures stem from improper subsoil preparation. In East County's dense clay soils, rolling sod over hardpack leads to shallow rooting and fungal root rot. Burgio Landscape Services roto-tills 4 to 6 inches deep, incorporates gypsum and organic nitrogen amendments, and laser-grades the sub-base with light rolling to eliminate drainage depressions.
How quickly can a newly installed sod lawn be walked on and mowed?
New sod requires 10 to 14 days of frequent light irrigation to knit its root system into the prepared topsoil. Homeowners should avoid heavy foot traffic during this establishment window. The first mowing can typically occur at day 14 once the roots resist lifting, cutting no more than one-third of the blade height.
How do you prevent fungal root rot in freshly rolled sod?
Root rot (Rhizoctonia and Pythium) develops when saturated subgrades experience high temperatures without adequate oxygen. We prevent fungal disease by engineering positive 1% to 2% subgrade drainage away from foundations, applying breathable organic compost, and calibrating matched-precipitation sprinkler nozzles to water in early mornings rather than late afternoons.
