Retaining Wall Construction in El Cajon & East County San Diego
Since 2014, licensed California C-27 contractor Burgio Landscape Services has provided structural retaining wall construction throughout El Cajon and East County San Diego. California CSLB C-27 licensed landscape construction, precision geotechnical subgrades, and lasting craftsmanship.
Engineered Retaining Walls & Slope Stabilization
Every project is completed by our full-time, uniformed craftsmen with company-owned machinery. We never subcontract your yard.
Paving & Hardscaping
Structural retaining walls create flat, usable square footage on properties previously restricted by steep topography. When carving out multi-tier residential outdoor living zones, property owners engage our certified paving contractor crew to transform newly retained upper and lower pads into expansive entertainment living spaces.
Paver Patios
Once a hillside is terraced and stabilized with reinforced retaining walls, our crews frequently build custom paver patios across the newly leveled pads, installing polymeric sand-jointed surfaces that extend usable living space directly to the wall perimeter.
Alpine Foothills Hillside Terracing: Failing Timber Wall Remediation
Real problems solved with engineered craftsmanship for East County homeowners.
Alpine Foothills Hillside Terracing: Failing Timber Wall Remediation
A property situated on a 22-degree decomposed granite slope in the Alpine foothills had an old 5-foot rotting railroad tie retaining wall that had bowed outward 8 inches, threatening to collapse onto the lower driveway during seasonal winter rains.
Rotting 5-foot timber structure, heavy hydrostatic water surcharge & 22-degree slope
Demolished timber wall, excavated 6 feet into the hillside, laid an 8-inch Class II base pad compacted to 98% Proctor density, and constructed an 85-foot long, 5.
5-foot high segmental block wall reinforced with 3 layers of biaxial geogrid and a 4-inch perforated SDR-35 drain line that discharged 100% of subterranean water to the roadside swale.

"We needed a retaining wall in our yard. We had several landscapers come out and give us estimates. After meeting with Chris we decided to go with Burgio Landscape. They were so professional and showed up on time every day. The wall is beautiful. Ryan, the lead, always let us know what was going on."
"We hired Burgio Landscape to replace our collapsing old wooden retaining wall in the front yard. The price was fair, the work was excellent, and the workers were on time every day and cleaned up thoroughly before leaving. Solid engineering and craftsmanship."
"We needed some clean up on our hill out back and blocks on one of our walls replaced. Chris came in with an affordable bid. His foreman Chuck, and the other guys did a great job. We are totally satisfied with their work and the finished wall."

Frequently Asked Questions
Clear answers on licensing, soil mechanics, and our on-site standards.
Do I need a building permit for a retaining wall in San Diego County?
In the City of El Cajon and unincorporated San Diego County, retaining walls measuring four feet or greater from the bottom of the footing to the top of the wall (or any wall supporting a slope surcharge or driveway) require structural engineering calculations and municipal building permits. As a licensed California C-27 contractor (#1036455), Burgio Landscape Services handles the entire permit acquisition, engineering coordination, and inspection process.
Why do retaining walls bow or collapse in East County?
Retaining walls fail almost exclusively due to poor drainage behind the wall face. When rainwater accumulates in clay soils without an outlet, hydrostatic pressure builds up behind the wall, pushing the structure forward. We prevent failure by installing continuous perforated SDR-35 French drains encased in geotextile fabric and backfilling with 3/4-inch washed crushed stone to relieve water weight before it can press against the wall.
What is geogrid reinforcement and when is it required?
Geogrid is a high-tensile polymeric mesh laid horizontally between courses of retaining wall blocks and extended back into the compacted soil mass behind the wall. It mechanically ties the wall face to the soil prism, preventing the wall from overturning under heavy hillside slopes or vehicular driveway surcharges.
What materials are best for retaining walls in El Cajon?
Segmental concrete blocks (such as Belgard, Keystone, and Allan Block) are the industry standard for durability, providing engineered interlocking lip connectors that resist shear failure while offering decorative stone textures. Mortared CMU block walls with stone veneer are also popular for formal architectural properties.
