Specimen Tree Installation
We source and install 24-inch, 36-inch, and 48-inch box treesβincluding Fruitless Olive, Western Redbud, Crape Myrtle, and Coast Live Oakβusing mechanized cranes and tree dollies.
Living Privacy Hedges & Screens
We install mature Podocarpus, Ficus nitida, Carolina Cherry Laurel, and Privet hedges to create instant 6- to 12-foot visual buffers and acoustic sound dampening along property boundaries.
California Native & Climate-Hardy Shrubs
We design layered garden borders with Ceanothus, Cleveland Sage, Manzanita, and Kangaroo Paw that provide vibrant color, attract native songbirds, and withstand summer heat.
Horticultural Soil Amendment
We integrate aged forest compost, gypsum, organic bone meal, and mycorrhizal inoculants into indigenous soils to stimulate mycorrhizal fungi and accelerate root establishment.
Mulch Installation & Bark Dressing
We deliver and blow in premium shredded cedar, dark walnut bark, or walk-on bark mulch across garden beds, providing weed barrier protection and moisture conservation.
Tree Staking & Root Barrier Systems
We install rigid HDPE subterranean root barriers along paver driveways and foundations, directing aggressive roots downward to protect expensive hardscape structures.

Project Spotlight: Foothill Privacy Hedge Screen & 36-Inch Box Olive Trees
Real problems solved with engineered craftsmanship for East County homeowners.
Project Spotlight: Foothill Privacy Hedge Screen & 36-Inch Box Olive Trees
Location: High Valley, Poway, CA (San Diego County)
An expansive hilltop residence was exposed to intense easterly Santa Ana winds and needed an immediate 150-foot privacy screen along a shared property line without invasive root intrusion into an adjacent paver pool deck.
Directed by Chris Burgio and Field Foreman Chuck, our uniformed, full-time in-house crew excavated a continuous 3-foot-wide planting trench lined with DeepRoot HDPE root deflection barriers along the paver patio edge. We amended the rocky Poway soil with organic compost and mycorrhizae, installing forty 15-gallon Podocarpus gracilior hedges spaced 36 inches on center. In the front courtyard, we placed two architectural 36-inch box multi-trunk Fruitless Olive trees secured with dual lodgepole stakes and subterranean deadman anchors. Chuckβs crew installed dedicated sub-surface drip rings and top-dressed the entire area with 4 inches of shredded cedar mulch.
Zero transplant shock or wind damage following 55 mph seasonal wind gusts. The hedges formed a dense, lush green privacy wall within 8 months, adding substantial estate value.

Frequently Asked Questions
Clear answers on licensing, soil mechanics, and our on-site standards.
How do you protect newly planted trees from Santa Ana wind damage in San Diego?
East County San Diego regularly experiences 50 to 60 mph gusting Santa Ana winds. We protect newly planted specimen trees using commercial double lodgepole pine staking or subterranean root-ball anchoring kits. Flexible tree ties allow trunk caliper flex without bark girdling, while wide saucer berms retain moisture around the root ball during dry wind events.
What are the best evergreen trees for living privacy hedges in San Diego County?
Top performing privacy hedge varieties include Podocarpus gracilior (Fern Pine) for clean non-invasive root profiles, Ficus nitida for rapid dense perimeter screening, Carolina Cherry Laurel for glossy evergreen foliage, and Hopseed Bush (Dodonaea) for drought-resilient foothill screening.
Why is organic mulch essential around newly installed plants and trees?
A 3- to 4-inch layer of shredded cedar or organic bark mulch conserves soil moisture by up to 50%, moderates extreme root temperatures during hot summer days, suppresses invasive weed growth, and gradually breaks down into humus, replenishing beneficial microbes in East County clay soils.
How does Burgio Landscape Services prepare native clay soil for sensitive plants?
We excavate planting pits twice the width of the container root ball but no deeper than the root crown to prevent settling. We blend excavated native soil with composted forest humus, mycorrhizal fungi, and organic soil amendments, creating a gradual textural transition that encourages roots to venture into surrounding native soils.
