Custom Fire Features & Entertainment Spaces
Every project is completed by our full-time, uniformed craftsmen with company-owned machinery. We never subcontract your yard.
Paving & Hardscaping
A custom fire feature achieves its fullest potential when built as the architectural centerpiece of an expansive outdoor living room. Property owners seeking cohesive exterior entertainment zones partner with our licensed paving contractor team to integrate fire pits seamlessly with surrounding interlocking living pads.
Paver Patios
Our crews frequently build custom fire features directly into expansive paver patios, surrounding the fire ring with curved stone seat walls that provide permanent built-in seating for guests while maintaining proper clearance from surrounding landscape plants.
Granite Hills Outdoor Lounge: Gas Fire Pit & Flagstone Coping Build
Real problems solved with engineered craftsmanship for East County homeowners.
Granite Hills Outdoor Lounge: Gas Fire Pit & Flagstone Coping Build
A residential estate in Granite Hills, El Cajon had a prefabricated metal fire bowl that had rusted through and scorched surrounding deck pavers, prompting the homeowners to seek a permanent, custom-engineered masonry gas fire lounge.
Safe subterranean gas line trenching & thermal protection against paver cracking
Poured an isolated reinforced concrete sub-pad, installed a dual-wall refractory firebrick core with an air expansion gap, trenched a subterranean gas line, and veneered the exterior with stacked stone and a 14-inch hand-chiseled flagstone cap with zero heat transfer to adjacent living pavers.
Project completed with zero settling and verified lifetime structural integrity.

Frequently Asked Questions
Clear answers on licensing, soil mechanics, and our on-site standards.
Why must refractory firebrick be used inside an outdoor fire pit?
Standard concrete blocks, decorative rocks, and bricks contain microscopic pockets of moisture. When exposed to direct flame temperatures exceeding 1,000 degrees, that moisture expands rapidly into steam, causing regular concrete blocks to crack or explode. Refractory firebrick is manufactured from dense clay fired at high kiln temperatures specifically engineered to withstand direct heat without spalling or structural fracturing.
What is better for an El Cajon home: wood-burning or natural gas fire pits?
Natural gas fire pits offer instant on/off convenience, zero flying embers, and no ash cleanup, making them ideal for urban and suburban neighborhoods with sensitive defensible space considerations. Wood-burning fire pits provide authentic crackling campfire ambiance and higher heat output, but require strict fire-safe clearances (typically 15 to 25 feet from structures) compliant with local East County fire regulations.
How does Burgio Landscape Services prevent fire pit cracking from heat expansion?
We engineer fire pits with a dual-wall design. The inner combustion core is built of refractory firebrick laid with high-heat mortar. We leave a one-inch air gap between the inner refractory core and the outer decorative stone veneer, preventing heat from conducting directly into exterior stones and allowing the inner core to expand and contract freely without cracking the exterior masonry.
Can a custom fire pit be added to an existing paver patio?
Yes. We can carefully remove existing pavers in the designated area, trench for gas or drainage lines, pour an isolated concrete foundation pad to support the heavy masonry structure, build the custom fire feature, and re-cut the surrounding pavers flush to the new stone veneer with fresh polymeric joint sand.
